WILLIAM'S TOWN BRANCH BIBLE SOCIETY 1842 |
---|
On Monday evening last, a meeting was convened in the Wesleyan Chapel, William's Town, for the purpose of forming a Branch Society in connexion with the Bible Society of Australia Felix. The Rev. William Waterfield was called to the chair, and after prayer, offered by the Rev. Peter Gunn, the Chairman read a letter from the Rev. James Forbes, expressing his regret at not being able to attend, and manifesting his warm attachment to the Society. The Chairman next read an abstract of the first Report of the Australia Felix Bible Society, as also the fundamental laws upon which the Auxiliary was based.
The following are the resolutions which were passed at the meeting:-
Moved by the Rev. Samuel Wilkinson, and seconded by David Goodsir:
"That this meeting, sensible of the importance of the objects of the British and Foreign Bible Society, and rejoicing in the establishment of an Auxiliary at Melbourne - Resolves that a branch of the same Auxiliary be formed at William's Town."
Moved by Abel Thorpe, and seconded by Charles Stone:
"That this meeting record their humble thanks to the God of all Grace for the signal success with which he has crowned the circulation of His Holy Word, and calls on all who love the Lord Jesus Christ, to unite in earnest prayer that it may aim, have free course, and be glorified over all the earth."
Moved by the Rev. Peter Gunn, and seconded by Joseph Ankers Marsden:
"That in the opinion of the meeting, the aspect of the times calls for the most strenuous exertions for the diffusion of the Holy Scriptures, that God's truth in its purity may be presented to the minds of our perishing fellow men."
The meeting was respectable, and far more numerous than was anticipated. A collection was made on the occasion, and after the usual Doxology was sung, and the Benediction was pronounced, the meeting separated highly gratified.
We have been requested to remind those persons who wish to supply themselves with copies of the Scriptures, that they may do so on application to the Rev. William Waterfield (the principal Depositary) or to Messrs. William Ker, junior, and James Dredge, Collins Street, and at William's Town, to Charles Stone at the School House.
